Exploring the Role of Digital Health Innovation in Building Healthier Food Environments

Lifesten Health Co-Founder and digital health advocate Ogweno Stephen recently presented the Lifesten Health platform during a two-day multi-stakeholder seminar organized by KELIN, focused on Digitalisation, Healthy Food Policy and Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Prevention in Kenya.

The engagement brought together youth leaders, civil society organizations, researchers, community representatives, development partners, and digital health innovators to examine how digital technologies can support healthier food environments, strengthen public health advocacy, and contribute to the prevention of non-communicable diseases.

As the burden of diet-related NCDs continues to rise across Africa, discussions centered on the growing influence of digital platforms in shaping dietary behaviors, nutrition awareness, food marketing practices, and public health outcomes.

Showcasing Lifesten Health as a Digital Tool for Nutrition and Prevention

During the training, Ogweno Stephen introduced participants to Lifesten Health and demonstrated how digital health innovation can play a critical role in improving nutrition outcomes and supporting healthier lifestyle choices.

His presentation highlighted how Lifesten Health goes beyond traditional health tracking by empowering individuals to actively manage their wellbeing through behavioral insights, wellness challenges, health education, symptom monitoring, and community engagement.

Participants explored how digital platforms can help individuals better understand the relationship between daily habits, nutrition, physical activity, and long-term health outcomes. The discussion emphasized the importance of shifting healthcare from a reactive model focused on treatment toward a preventive model centered on healthier behaviors and early action.

“Nutrition is one of the most important drivers of long-term health outcomes, yet many people lack the tools and support needed to consistently make healthier choices. Digital health platforms have the opportunity to bridge that gap by making prevention more accessible, engaging, and personalized,” noted Ogweno Stephen during the discussions.

Strengthening Community Voices Through Digital Advocacy

The KELIN training provided an important platform for stakeholders to examine emerging challenges within digital spaces, particularly the growing online marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, especially among children and young people.

Participants discussed opportunities for digital advocacy, policy engagement, nutrition education, and community mobilization aimed at creating healthier food environments.

Through the Lifesten Health platform, Ogweno Stephen demonstrated how digital communities, wellness challenges, and health literacy initiatives can be leveraged to encourage healthier behaviors while generating valuable insights that support public health interventions.

The session also explored how digital health tools can complement broader national efforts to address rising rates of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other nutrition-related conditions.

The Growing Role of Digital Health Innovation in Rwanda and Africa

As a recognized digital health innovation Rwanda success story, Lifesten Health continues to explore new ways of supporting individuals, employers, insurers, researchers, and governments in improving health outcomes through technology.

The platform combines behavioral science, health tracking, wellness challenges, community engagement, and digital screening tools to help users better understand their health risks and build sustainable healthy habits over time.

Through partnerships, research initiatives, and community-based programs, Lifesten Health has already contributed to large-scale health awareness campaigns, cardiovascular disease prevention efforts, and digital health research across the region.

Looking Ahead

The KELIN engagement reinforced the growing importance of collaboration between public health organizations, policymakers, technology innovators, and communities in addressing the complex challenges associated with nutrition and non-communicable diseases.

For Ogweno Stephen and the Lifesten Health team, the event represented another opportunity to demonstrate how digital health innovation can support healthier populations, strengthen prevention efforts, and empower individuals to take greater control of their health journeys.

As digital technologies continue to transform healthcare across Africa, Lifesten Health remains committed to developing practical, scalable solutions that improve health literacy, encourage healthy behaviors, and contribute to stronger and more resilient health systems.
