Our Origin Story

The inception of Lifesten Health can be traced back to the convergence of two stories belonging to its co-founders, Stephen Ogweno, the CEO of Lifesten Health, and Peace Iraguha, the COO. Both of them were driven by personal grief, life experiences and a desire to make a difference in the field of non-communicable diseases. In 2020, their paths crossed at an entrepreneurship accelerator program called the Jasiri Talent Investment Program, where they decided to merge their passion for creating a positive impact in the non-communicable disease space, starting in Rwanda, where they first met.

To understand the motivation behind Lifesten Health, it’s essential to delve into the individual stories of its cofounders. Stephen Ogweno was born with childhood obesity and was expected to develop obesity, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes by the age of 18, 25 and 35 respectively. However, due to the support of loved ones who understood the disease, he was able to adopt a healthy lifestyle and recover.

In addition to his lived experience, Stephen also cared for four close relatives who suffered from diabetes and stroke, and ultimately died from the same illnesses.

Peace Iraguha, on the other hand, had a formative experience while working as a nutritionist, fresh out of university. She was assigned to care for a patient named Lisa (not her real name), who was living with diabetes and hypertension. Peace developed a close relationship with Lisa and saw signs of improvement in her health. Unfortunately, Peace was transferred to another facility, and soon after, Lisa was diagnosed with being out of critical risk and sent back to the community. However, weeks later, Peace received news of Lisa’s death, which was attributed to poor mismanagement and low access to drugs, among other factors. This tragedy prompted Peace to think about how she could make nutrition care and access more available to prevent people from getting sick. The two co-founders brought their ideas together when they met at the entrepreneurship accelerator program, with a common goal of preventing people from becoming sick, especially with non-communicable diseases. They agreed that the solution was to focus on behavior change and leverage technology to make early screening accessible to members of the community. This is the beginning of Lifesten Health
